In unfamiliar surroundings patrolled by the English and French, a solitary hunter in his birch bark canoe searches
for fur and meat to warm and feed his people through a long cold winter. He has seen geese feeding near the island, but keenly aware of the danger he faces, has been distracted by movement on the near shore, a noise, or perhaps by a sixth sense.
