Close Call

Mustering out of George Washington's militia has given this citizen of the Virginia colony the opportunity and the inspiration to set off across the mountains stretching westward from the flat farmlands which had been home. Only a few days into the wilderness, at the top of a snow covered ridge, he is stopped in his tracks by rustlings in the underbrush. Rifle ready, he steps to the side of a big tree, chances a glance around the side, and breathes once again, realizing that the big Black Bear whose winter sleep has been disturbed will not notice his presence.
